Did You Know There’s a Reality Show About a Farm in Pennsylvania?

It’s true! The reality television show Farm Kings, on the Great American Country network, follows the King family and their work at Freedom Farms, their business in Butler, Pa. The family raises produce, meats and grains on its 200-acre third-generation farm, an undertaking that — as you might imagine — comes along with countless trials and tribulations, springing from both the natural environment and family drama. And that’s the stuff of reality T.V. gold, right?

The series, which launched in 2012, follows the matriarch of the family, Lisa King, whom her family calls “Mama Bear Lisa,” and her 10 children. Joe, the oldest, is the farm’s CEO (and a Penn State Civil Engineering grad); Tim, known as “The Plant Doctor” plants and tends to all of the crops; Pete, the “Human Harvester” helps out all over the farm; Dan, the “Utility Man” manages Freedom Farm’s farmers market. The other King kids round out the cast of characters, and the show follows the ins and outs of the daily struggles of running an operational farm.

While the show wrapped up in 2014, you can still catch videos on Great American Country’s website, and occasional episodes on the channel. You can also visit Freedom Farms, about 25 miles north of Pittsburgh — don’t miss its sandwich shop, donut shop and farm stand!
